Final four set for 4A Tournament

The path to a provincial banner grew narrower on Thursday as quarter-final games across all four tiers of the BC School Sports Boys Basketball Provincial Championships played out at Langley Events Centre, leaving just four teams standing in each bracket heading into Friday’s semi-final round.

An all-Vancouver Island championship remains possible for a second straight year at the BC School Sports 4A Boys Basketball Provincial Tournament at Langley Events Centre after both won their respective quarter-final games on Thursday.

7:00pm – Vancouver College Fighting Irish (#2) vs. Oak Bay Bays (#6)

8:45pm – Dover Bay Dolphins (#1) vs. Kelowna Owls (#4)

Both games will be played on Ken Winslade Court inside the Arena Bowl.

Kelowna 92 St. George’s School 84

Wells Grundy poured in 30 points to send the Kelowna Owls into the final four. With Grundy leading the way and all five starters scoring in double figures, the Owls defeated the St. George’s School Saints 92-84. Willem Urban led the Saints with 24 points.

Dover Bay 78 Centennial 69

The tandem of Dane Schmidt and Joe Linder proved too much for the Centennial Centaurs. Schmidt scored 30 while Linder added 29 as the Dover Bay Dolphins defeated Centennial 78-69. Alex Birsan led the Centaurs with 39 points in the loss. 

Vancouver College 83 Semiahmoo 70

A balanced effort, with all five starters scoring in double figures, propelled the Vancouver College Fighting Irish to an 83-70 win over the Semiahmoo Thunderbirds. Nathan Chen and Lucas Tan-Ngo each scored 15 for the Irish, while Jack Snead poured in a game-high 35 for Semiahmoo.

Oak Bay 67 Tamanawis 66

Simon Wiwcharuk-Barr’s go-ahead basket propelled the Oak Bay Bays into the semi-finals with a 67-66 victory over the Tamanawis Wildcats, marking the first upset of the championship side in two days. Wiwcharuk-Barr finished with 22 points, and Marcus Kao added 21, while Victor Cartel led the Wildcats with 25.
