While the seeding mostly held firm, there were a pair of upsets on Day 1 of the BC School Sports Boys Basketball Provincial Championships.
All 64 teams across the four tiers tipped off at Langley Events Centre on Wednesday with the No. 13 Abbotsford Senior Panthers and No. 11 Mark R. Isfeld Ice (Courtenay) advancing in 4A and 3A Tournament, respectively.
Thursday will see the quarter-final round with those games beginning at 3:30pm while the consolation side of the draw sees their games tip off at 8:30a.m.
1A Tournament
The top eight seeds all advanced in the 1A Tournament, setting up the quarter-final round with the top half of the draw featuring No. 1 St. John’s School Eagles against the No. 8 Aberdeen Hall Gryphons while the No. 4 Southpointe Academy Titans face the No. 5 Duncan Christian Chargers.
On the bottom half of the draw, the No. 2 Gidgalang Kuuyas Naay Breakers against the No. 7 Sparwood Spartans and the No. 3 Unity Christian Flames versus the No. 6 Immaculata Mustangs.
2A Tournament
Seeds one through eight all won their opening-round games on Wednesday.
Thursday’s quarter-final round features the Pacific Academy Breakers (#1) against the Abbotsford Christian Knights (#8) and the Westsyde Whundas (#4) versus the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags (#5).
And on the bottom of the bracket, it will be the Summerland Rockets (#2) facing the Notre Dame Jugglers (#7) and the Collingwood Cavaliers (#3) against the King George Dragons (#6) in a battle of the top two teams from Vancouver Sea-to-Sky.
3A Tournament
The 3A Tournament featured one upset as the No. 11 Mark R. Isfeld Ice advanced and will now play the No. 3 St. Patrick Celtics in the quarter-finals. The other game on that part of the bracket sees No. 2 Windsor Wolves face the No. 7 Richmond Colts.
The other half of the draw pits No. 1 St/ Thomas More Collegiate Knights against the No. 8 Pitt Meadows Marauders and the No. 4 M.E.I. Eagles versus the No. 5 Wellington Wildcats.
4A Tournament
The biggest upset of the day saw the Abbotsford Senior Panthers (#13) advance, earning themselves a game against the St. George’s School Saints (#5). The other quarter-final game will feature the defending champion Spectrum Thunder (#1) against the Mount Boucherie Bears (#8). On the bottom half of the draw, the Dover Bay Dolphins (#2) face the Holy Cross Crusaders and the Vancouver College Fighting Irish (#3) play the Terry Fox Ravens (#6).
