After knocking on the door for the last several years, the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags broke through for the Victoria school’s first girls’ provincial basketball title.
The Blue Jags – seeded No. 2 – upset the top-ranked Holy Cross Crusaders (Surrey) 62-54 in Saturday’s championship final of the BC School Sports 2A Girls Basketball Provincial Tournament on the Arena Bowl Court at Langley Events Centre.
St. Michaels University School won silver in each of the past two tournaments, but on the third try, completed the task at hand.
With the score tied late in the third quarter, the Blue Jags hit a 3-pointer and led the rest of the way.
Avery Geddes – who was chosen both the Championship Player of the Game and the Most Valuable Player of the tournament – finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Blue Jags with Charlie Anderson adding 16 points and nine rebounds and Olivia Pickering finishing with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, with four assists as well.
The Crusaders’ Solene Jackson finished with 24 points while Megan McCash chipped in 14.
In the bronze medal game, it was the Britannia Bruins (Vancouver) defeating the St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights (Burnaby) 74-60.
