Semi-finals set as field down to final four

Four teams remain standing in the hunt for championship glory.

The Oak Bay Bays, Vancouver College Fighting Irish, St. Patrick Celtics and Terry Fox Ravens were all winners on Sunday during the quarter-final round at the Junior Boys Basketball Invitational Tournament at Langley Events Centre. The 32-team tournament is being co-hosted by Brookswood Secondary and R.E. Mountain Secondary.

Oak Bay, Vancouver College and St. Patrick were the tournament’s top three seeds while the Ravens checked in at No. 5.

Vancouver College and St. Patrick will tip off in the first semi-final on Monday (Feb. 26) at 6:30pm and that will be followed by the Bays and the Ravens at 8:00pm with both games on South Court at Langley Events Centre.

Day 2 Recap

 

Day2-St Pat vs Pacific Academy

St. Patrick 46 Pacific Academy 43 (OT)

Trailing late in the contest, the St. Patrick Celtics scored late to force overtime and rally, defeating the Pacific Academy Breakers 46-43. St. Patrick’s Riley Santa Juana was clutch in the late going, hitting all six of his free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and overtime as he finished with 15 points. Heracles Mai led the team with 16.

Pacific Academy – the 22nd seed looking for a third-straight upset victory – finally ran out of steam. Judah Ashbee had 18 for the Breakers while Adriel Bougeup had 13.

 Day2-VC vs Enver Creek

Vancouver College 44 Enver Creek 

A two-point game with eight minutes to play, the Vancouver College Fighting Irish hit a pair of big three-pointers – one each from Lucas Tan-Ngo and Micah Mayott – to pull away from the Enver Creek Cougars 44-38.

Tan-Ngo finished with 19 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. Smeer Sandhar had nine points to lead Enver Creek.

Day2-Oak Bay vs Collingwood

Oak Bay – the tournament’s top seed – was a 55-43 winner over the No. 8 Collingwood Cavaliers. It was an eight-point game in the fourth quarter before the Bays iced it from the free throw line as they hit 10 of 12 free throws in the final period.

Olin Lakos proved unstoppable in the game as he poured in 27 points – 20 of which came in the first half – while Marcus Kao scored nine in the fourth quarter and finished with 16 for the game.

The Cavaliers’ Peter Huang had 15 and Harry Bell chipped in with a dozen points.

Day2-Fox vs Matheson

Terry Fox 56 L.A. Matheson 49

Terry Fox, the No. 5 seed, used a fourth-quarter comeback to edge the No. 4 L.A. Matheson Mustangs. The teams were tied at the half before the Mustangs went ahead 39-35 thanks to a 6-0 spurt to close the third. Terry Fox would dominate with 21 points in the fourth quarter for the 56-49 win. Damien Onopitke (22 points) and Jaiden Shergill (13) were the main scorers for the Mustangs.
