Killarney Upends Top Seed to Claim 2015 TELUS Junior Boys Provincial Championship Title

Township of Langley, BC (Saturday, February 28, 2015) – The Killarney Cougars claimed the title of 2015 TELUS Junior Boys Provincial Basketball Champions after defeating the top-ranked Kitsilano Blue Demons 64-55 at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars, ranked seventh heading into the tournament beat the second seed Tamanawis in the quarter-finals and Walnut Grove in the semi-finals, in order to advance to Saturday’s big game.

The Blue Demons won every game heading into the final by at least five points including a 68-58 victory against fourth-ranked Steveston-London in the semi-finals.

Killarney came out of the gates flying, opening up a 23-9 lead after the first quarter. Guard Isabelo Bautista scored 14 points in the opening quarter including three 3-pointers. The Cougars went into halftime and looked to be in control ahead of the second half. The top seed wouldn’t go away quietly as Luca Lizdek scored 9 points in the quarter to cut the Cougars lead to 49-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Kitsilano would cut the lead to six late in the fourth but a clutch three-ball from Game MVP Kenan Krupic sealed the deal for the Cougars, crowning themselves champions. Krupcic led all scorers with 21 points while Duncan Ross led the Blue Demons with 17 points.

Killarney guard Jason Tatengco was named Tournament MVP while forward Kiante Knight was voted Tournament Defensive MVP.

The third place game saw the Walnut Grove Gators defeat the Steveston-London Sharks 71-59. Gators guard Brett Christensen led all scorers with 21 points as Walnut Grove took home the bronze.
