Final four set at Junior Boys Basketball Provincial Invitational Tournament

For the second straight game, the Heritage Woods Kodiaks knocked off a higher seed and now their sights are set on the top ranked Tamanawis Wildcats.

The Kodiaks knocked off the fourth-seed Sullivan Heights Stars 70-58 in the quarter-final round of the Junior Boys Basketball Provincial Invitational Tournament on Sunday at Langley Events Centre.

The 32-team tournament featuring some of the top junior boys’ teams from around the province is now at the midway point with the semi-final round set for Monday night at 6:30pm and 8:00pm with the Wildcats and Kodiaks set to clash in the late game while Langley’s Brookswood Bobcats will face the St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights in the earlier contest.

The Bobcats – seeded 7^th – were convincing 80-54 winners over the No. 18 Elgin Park Orcas while the No. 11 Knights pulled off a second consecutive upset, this time defeating the third-ranked Burnaby South Rebels 45-40.

Heritage Woods Kodiaks 70 Sullivan Heights Stars 58

Four players scored in double digits as the Heritage Woods Kodiaks were 70-58 winners over the Sullivan Heights Stars. Joseph Thompson scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the first half while Afu Bullock and Farris Essandoh each had 13, and Mathew Purdy scored 11.

Nick Baxter led the Stars with 23 points while Ethan Hugall chipped in 13.

Tamanawis Wildcats 63 St. Patrick Celtics 51

With the score tied at 33 in the third quarter, Sayvic Dhami sparked a quarter-closing 13-3 run as he hit a trio of 3-pointers to build a lead the Tamanawis Wildcats would not relinquish as they topped the St. Patrick Celtics 63-51.

Dhami finished with five 3-pointers in the third period alone and scored 21 points for the No. 1-ranked Wildcats against the No. 8 Celtics. Tray Belanger had 13 for Tamanawis.

St. Patrick was good on 10 3-pointers as a team, with Jakobi Matalabos and Danny Geppert each hitting five and finishing with 21 and 15 points, respectively.

Brookswood Bobcats 80 Elgin Park Orcas 54

The Brookswood Bobcats sank a dozen 3-pointers as they routed the Elgin Park Orcas 80-54. Logan Stewart finished with five tripled and 37 points while Jayden Kenyon hit four 3’s – all in the fourth quarter – and scored 22 points.

The game turned in the second quarter as the No. 7 Bobcats outscored the 18^th-seed Orcas 21-9 to build a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

Sam Liu and Elijah Weiss led Elgin Park with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights 45 Burnaby South Rebels 40

The closest of the four quarter-final games was the No. 11 St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights fend off the No. 3 Burnaby South Rebels 45-40. The game was tied six times and featured eight lead changes with the Knights scoring seven of the last 10 points.

Zeru Abera led St. Thomas More Collegiate with 19 points while Jacob Oreta finished with 15. Llorikk Gutierrez finished with 17 points for the Rebels.
