Final 8 set for Junior Boys Basketball Invitational

After a grueling first day of action where each team played twice, the quarter-final round is set at the 2024 Junior Boys Basketball Invitational Tournament.

The 32-team tournament is being co-hosted at Langley Events Centre by Brookswood Secondary and R.E. Mountain Secondary.

And the bracket nearly held to form through most of the first 32 games as seven of the top eight seeds have all advanced to the quarter-final round with No. 1 Oak Bay against No. 8 Collingwood, No. 2 Vancouver College and No. 7 Enver Creek and No. 4 L.A. Matheson facing No. 5 Terry Fox. The lone non-top eight team is No. 22 Pacific Academy, who will go up against No. 3 St. Patrick.

The first two quarter-final matchups tip off at 11:30am while the latter two go at 1:00pm. All four games are on Sunday (Feb. 25) at Langley Events Centre.

Day 1 Recap

The Pacific Academy Breakers pulled off pair of upsets to make the final eight, defeating the 11th-ranked South Kamloops Titans 64-35 and the No. 6 Abbotsford Christian Knights 64-48.

Tei Lee Kim’s 20 points led the Breakers in their opening round victory with Josh Vaidal topping the Titans with 11 points. Abbotsford Christian made their way to the round of 16 behind an 18-point effort from Levi Vanderwal, which included six three-pointers.

Up next for the Breakers will be the No. 3 St. Patrick Celtics after the Vancouver school won 68-43 against the Handsworth Royals and then 76-49 against the Rick Hansen Hurricanes. Riley Santa Juana had 21 in the first game for the Celtics and topped that with 22 against the Hurricanes. Harjap Thind scored 19 in a losing effort.

The Hurricanes had advanced to the Round of 16 with a 69-66 over Tamanawis behind Sahij Dhaliwal’s 25 points and 21 from Pratham Bhogal.

The other quarter-final contest on that half of the draw pits the No. 2 Vancouver College Fighting Irish and the seventh-seed Enver Creek Cougars.

Vancouver College was dominant defensively in the second half of the first game, holding the Fernie Falcons to eight points after the break. John Anthony scored 13 to lead a balanced VC attack and Anderson added 14 in the round two 52-37 win over the Richmond Colts to book a spot in the final eight.

The Colts were coming off a narrow 50-46 win in the opening round over Brentwood College. Joshua Ning and Justin Chen each potted 12 points for Richmond.

The top half of the draw features top-seed Oak Bay against No. 8 Collingwood and No. 4 L.A. Matheson versus No. 5 Terry Fox.

Oak Bay was a 58-49 winner over the Fleetwood Park Dragons in the Round of 16, while their opening round match was 74-41 victory over the Duchess Park Condors. Marcus Kao’s 20 points led the way for Oak Bay against the Dragons while Olin Lakos (17 points) and Noah Beck (14) were the team’s top scorers in the first game. Jedrian Cariago scored 16 for Fleetwood Park against Oak Bay.

The Bays’ next opponent is the Cavaliers after Collingwood defeated the Rutland Voodoos 64-44 behind 23 points from Harry Bell and 15 from Jake McAdam.  Collingwood was also a 72-24 round one winner over the Charles Hays Rainmakers with Bell was again the team’s top scorer with 20 points, 15 of which came in the first quarter. William Campbell had 19 points for Rutland in the loss to Collingwood.

The Mustangs won 59-28 over the R.E. Mountain Eagles behind 16 points from Jashan Mahal in their opener with Ruo Lee’s 10 points leading the Eagles. Matheson’s next matchup saw Damien Onopitke pour in 21 points with Jaiden Shergill adding 14 in their 57-42 win over the Killarney Cougars. Noa Skarica had 18 for Killarney. The Cougars had won their opening match, 50-42 over the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags. The combo of Clinton Do (15 points) and Reuel De Sagun (13) scored 28 of their team’s points. Dani Pelyhe led the Blue Jags with 14 points.

Matheson’s opponent will be the Terry Fox Ravens as the Ravens won 67-35 against the Mark R. Isfeld Ice in the opener, and 41-23 over the Vancouver Technical Talismen. Terry Fox used a balanced attack in game two with eight players scoring, led by eight points apiece from Maxsym Cichecki and Jayson Imani. Game one saw Matthew Klassen (14 points) and Noah Jean (13) pace the Ravens attack. For the Talismen, Lennox Leacock’s 11 points were a game-high. Vancouver Technical had won 56-35 over the Kalamalka Lakers in both teams’ first game. Lennox Leacock’s had 11 points in both games on Saturday with Ade Ajobo finishing with a dozen.
