1A FALCONS, FLAMES AIMING FOR RESPECTIVE FIRST TITLES

The three top seeds and the No. 5 seed are the last four standing at the BC High School 1A Boys Basketball Tournament through two days at Langley Events Centre.

No. 2 Kelowna Christian (the defending champion) will face No. 3 Unity Christian in one semi-final (3:00 p.m.) while the other pits No. 1 Highroad Academy against No. 5 Fernie in the other (5:15 p.m.).

The Fernie Falcons and Unity Christian Flames are each in search of their first provincial titles with the Falcons guaranteed a best-ever finish while the Flames are hoping to improve on a fourth place showing in 2014.

The Highroad Academy Knights won bronze in 2019, losing to the Kelowna Christian Knights in the semi-final with Kelowna going on to win the gold, the program’s 1A record sixth title (they also have a seventh overall title after competing at the 2A level for one season). Highroad Academy has one title (2002) and five medals in seven previous appearances.

Unity Christian Flames 92 St. John’s Eagles 55

Unity Christian led from start to finish against the Eagles, up 25-12 after one quarter and 52-20 at the half. The Flames shot a sizzling 59.4 per cent from the field and won going away despite going to the foul line just six times. They also held a 53-28 rebounding advantage, including snaring 17 offensive rebounds compared to the Eagles’ 18 defensive boards.

Wilclair Neufeld led the offence with 23 points while Wilton Haan had 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Defensively, the team made things difficult in the lane for St. John as the Eagles shot just 27.4 per cent.

Eason Tan was the leading scorer for St. John’s with 15 points. He also had six rebounds, four steals, three assists and a blocked shot.

Kelowna Christian Knights 88 Glenlyon Norfolk Gryphons 54

A three-point barrage has the defending champions one game away from a return trip to the gold-medal game. The No. 2 seed Kelowna Christian Knights connected on 14 of their 24 shots from beyond the arc (58.3 per cent) in a 88-54 win over the No. 7 Glenlyon Gryphons.

Nate Wiebe (22 points, six-for-8 from the three-point line) and Indy Hallett (19 points, four-for-seven from beyond the arc) did the bulk of the damage for the Knights. Jake Sabbagh added 15 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Connor Elliott led the Gryphons with 18 points.

Highroad Academy Knights 79 Cedars Christian Eagles 66

The top-ranked Highroad Academy Knights overcame a combined 50 points from a pair of Grade 11s for the Cedars Christian Eagles in a 79-66 victory. Evan Staves (26 points) and Ben Wolitski (24 points) led the attack for the ninth seed while Aidan Morris had 31 points and Nico Kattenberg scored 13 points while grabbing 20 of his team’s 43 rebounds.

Fernie Falcons 84 Barriere Cougars 71

The combination of Asher Hannemann and Nesta Malcom scored 55 points as the Fernie Falcons upset the Barriere Cougars 84-71 in the four-five matchup.

Hannemann had 29 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals while Malcom finished with 26 points, eight rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots to lead the No. 5 Falcons to their first-ever provincial semi-final. Tyson Schilling (27 points, nine rebounds) and Cameron Kerslake (22 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and two assists) paced the Cougars attack.
